The next less lethal alternative to be presented on this page is a solution that could be idle for self defense at home as well as on the go. A company called First Strike sells high-end paintball equipment which also includes .68 caliber paintball markers (guns). One of their most recent products is the First Strike FSC which is a compact paintball pistol platform. It uses compressed gas to propel rounds down range. The less lethal self defense application utilizing paintball guns comes from the various types of rounds that are available for this purpose. Standard paintball rounds are not meant for self defense purposes but there are a variety of other options for users to load into these paintball markers which will make them effective as less lethal self defense options. Some of these include pepper powder balls which will provide the equivalent effect to pepper spray but with much greater distances than standard pepper spray aerosol cans. Another option is glass breaker rounds which are typically hard nylon filled projectiles meant to penetrate automobile windshields. There are also other less lethal .68 caliber rounds that are rubber coated metal balls that can be deployed through platforms like the FSC. The First Strike FSC is designed to have a smaller, modular grip frame and shorter overall length. The FSC can be powered by 8 gram or 12 gram Co2 cartridges (with use of T8.1/T9.1 Magazine) and HPA and accepts 8.1/9.1 barrels making this one of the most customizable platforms on the market. The FSC accepts many existing T8.1/T9.1 accessories so you can build your platform to help you in various self defense scenarios. Features also include a 20% smaller grip than standard 8.1 pistol. Packages typically ship out with two 6 round magazines included. The FSC also has an under mount rail, Mil-Spec textured grip, and a micro-honed barrel. The company PepperBall sells almost an identical version for law enforcement less lethal application called the TCP. The FSC is the civilian version of this platform. This FSC package retails for around $350.00.
The next less lethal alternative to be discussed on this website comes from a company called SANG MIN INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD which is based in Taiwan. The company’s Titan line specializes in a variety of self defense weapons that are less lethal. One of these weapons is the Anti-Riot Stun Pistol. This weapon combines options of other pepper ball style launchers with that of electric stun capability. The weapon is relatively small and made from T6 aluminum alloy. It functions of of compressed air or CO2 like may other less lethal launcher systems. It is magazine fed and provide the user with the options of firing pepper balls, hard rubber balls (riot balls), and electric bullets that have a self contained 9V battery. The electric bullets are rechargeable. The weapon is capable of engaging targets at a distance of 30 meters, or, 98 feet. The weapon measures just slightly over 8.5 inches in length and uses the 12g CO2 cartridges. front grips and laser sights can be added to the system for better accuracy and handling.
Our next piece of less lethal tech is as sleek and sexy as it is effective. Tiberius Arms is a manufacturer of high end paintball gear and compact .68 caliber launchers. The former less lethal device known as the SWAT C8 which has been discontinued and the still existing FN P 303 which is marketed as a true less lethal device for law enforcement, was based off of the Tiberius T 8.1 platform. The Tiberius T 8.1 is a semi-automic, 8 round, pistol sized launcher ideal for home defense and personal protection. This unit is sleeker and smaller than it’s competition while still delivering a muzzle velocity of 280 fps(feet per second) at ranges of 30-50 feet with around 25 joules of energy to it’s target. This unit can be customized in several ways including red dot sights, laser sights, and with a “First Strike” conversion kit the unit can accept fin-stabilized projectiles similar to those fired by the FN 303 greatly improving it’s accuracy. This unit is capable of rapid reload with extra magazines each holding a twelve gram C02 cartridge and eight rounds of less lethal ammo, from glass breakers to chemical PAVA/pepper rounds and everything in between. The specs include a solid aluminum upper receiver, dual rubber detents, side dovetailed iron sights, low profile C02 quick puncture, and grooved full length grip for comfort and control. The T 8.1 measures 10.5″ in length and is roughly 2 lbs, so it may not be the best device for concealable carry but when it comes to gas powered launchers it’s still fairly compact. The unit comes in three sexy color variations black, black/silver, and silver. The T 8.1 is designed and produced in the United States so you can count on it’s reliability. *NOTE: ammo choice is crucial when using a .68 cal paintball marker for self defense purposes. While regular paintballs can sting on impact they may not be sufficient enough to stop a determined attacker. For alternative ammo choices see the previous article posted in this category.
This unit’s MSRP is roughly $200.00 and is available at many online retailers.
The First Strike conversion kit is roughly $100.00
Our next impact launcher is a new platform from Indiana based Tippmann who has been manufacturing quality paintball gear and markers right here in the U.S. since 1986. The NEW TCR or Tactical Compact Rifle, is a .68 caliber paintball platform which accepts the First Strike projectiles which are enhanced fin-stabilized projectiles that offer significantly improved accuracy down range. There are companies other than FNH (FN Herstal) that produce fin-stabilized less lethal projectiles that can be used in the TCR. The TCR has many features reminiscent of the HK MP7. The TCR is both a mag-fed as well as hopper fed platform allowing both max capacity or maneuverability in CQC style situations such as in home defense. The unit ships out with two magazines a 12 round extended mag and a standard 7 round mag. The TCR has a tactical/ adjustable stock which can hold a spare mag for quick reload. For less lethal application this unit can have one magazine loaded with impact munitions such as glass breakers or hard rubber balls, while the other is loaded with chemical agents such as pepper powder or pava irritant which causes an assailant’s eyes to close and mucus membranes to cause difficulty in breathing. The TCR platform is VERY customizable with various barrels, optics , and a frame lined with piccatiny rails. The TCR can use CO2 or HPA as a power source. The unit delivers projectiles down range at 330+ fps or 33 joules of energy.
