Safety Tip: Replace Builder’s Grade Screws

Welcome to Less Lethal Alternative’s latest sub category, Safety Tips. In this category you will find articles posted periodically that will give you advice about how you can fortify your home to prevent easy access and unwanted intrusion. Today’s tip is about replacing all your screws in the hinges and strike plates within your home’s front and back doors. I have personally moved three times in three different states within 6 years and lived in homes built anywhere from 1960′s to 2006 and have found that all these residences had one thing in common other than running water and electricity, extremely short builder’s grade screws protecting your family in your home from the dangers of the outside world. In 2008 me and my wife were living in Fort Worth Texas and were both at work when I got a phone call from the Fort Worth Police Department. At first I thought it was one of my buddies trying to prank call me, but soon realized that the situation was a no joke scenario. Our home had been burglarized. Thanks to a home security system that was immediately triggered when the intruders kicked in our front door, they did not have time to clean us out and only grabbed things that they immediately saw as valuable. In the aftermath of this experience we were facing only a few hundred dollars in stolen property, but thousands of dollars in damages. At closer inspection of the door frame around our main entry I was shocked to see that the main hinges and strike plate which were supposed to protect my family from unwanted visitors were only held in place by insignificant one inch screws which offered no real protection. After this incident I spent a great deal of time learning about better ways to fortify our home to prevent this sort of thing from ever happening again.  One of the quickest, cheapest, and most effective ways to immediately bolster our home security was to purchase a whole new set of  five inch screws that would in-fact screw into the wall past the actual door frame it self making it increasingly difficult to conduct any forced entry into our home.  In addition I found several kits that made forced entry though doors incredibly hard, one of which was the Door Jamb Armor by Armor Concepts which is sold online and at Lowe’s. Since that awful experience which left my wife and I feeling violated and unable to peacefully rest in our own home, I have made a conscious effort to always replace the crap builder’s use in initial construction within a week of us moving to a new place. Stay safe.

SPARK the Brazilian ECD

Our next Less Lethal Alternative comes to us from the land infamous for stretches of beautiful beaches, wild untamed jungles, and a laundry list of famous mixed martial arts fighters. Condor Non Lethal a company based in Brazil is coming out with a promising new ECD (electronic control device) called SPARK which will surely be a great addition to the less lethal armament. When doing my research about this device I found sources to be scarce and all that I found were in Portuguese. So with the assistance of Google Translate I was able to pull some information directly from Condor’s website and translate it for you. When the engineers first brought their ideas about SPARK to the drawing board their main objectives were to maximize effectiveness in combination with more safety for the user. This was a key pillar in the development of Spark. The project was designed and implemented with the objective of offering a safer alternative non-lethal situations of urban conflict. The SPARK ECD works much like the Taser X26C and M26C but may have a few additional options to offer than the earlier one-shot ECDs. Like all ECDs on the market the SPARK device attacks the human nervous system which communicates through electrical impulses. The command center (brain and spinal cord) processes information and makes decisions. The peripheral nervous system includes sensory and motor nerves. It does this by delivering electrical shocks through a set of darts which hinder or block those electrical impulses causing temporary paralysis.  The SPARK ECD has two cartridges an orange one with a reach of 19 feet and a black with a reach of about 26 feet with a cycle time of 5 seconds per trigger pull. It features an ambidextrous On / off switch, LEDs which communicate to the user when the weapon is activated and displays information about date, time, internal temperature, and battery level of the device. The unit also has a laser and flash light combo as well as a three point fixed sight. The batteries which are used by the SPARK ECD take about 5 hours for a full recharge. I have not seen any retailers selling this device in the U.S. at this point and I’m not sure how the American consumer might be able to buy one. I have sent these inquires to the manufacturer as well as a request on the price point. I will keep you informed as I learn more about it.

An Oldie But a Goodie- Air Taser 34000

The Air Taser 34000 is a blast from the past which can still be felt today if you are unlucky enough to be standing at the business end of one of these devices. The Air Taser 34000 came out in 1994 and was the first Taser unit not to be classified as a firearm as it used compressed gas to fire it’s projectiles instead of gun powder.  This unit was also the first in Taser’s infamous less lethal line up which used the AFIDs (Anti Felony Ids) which are very small confetti like signature strips that get shot out along with the projectiles when they are deployed. Like most of Taser’s civilian lineup, the Air Taser has a reach of 15 feet when firing the projectiles and has a stun period of 30 seconds per trigger pull to allow the user time to escape from a hostile situation. If needed the device doubles as a traditional stun gun and delivers the shock directly upon contact to the assailant’s body. This device uses a standard 9V alkaline battery and has an indicator which will tell you when the device needs a new battery. Unlike Taser’s newer models like the M26C and X26C, the Air Taser 34000 did not come with an internal laser sight, but does offer that as an external accessory piece. The standard kit comes equipped with one Airtaser, two dartpacks, instructional video, special practice target, 9V Battery, and hard carrying case. Since this unit is older than many other similar devices the retail on it is priced a lot lower than many other Taser units.

Unit starts at $269.95 for basic package.

21st Century Nunchuck-Extend A Chuck

Today we will cover an ancient martial arts weapon which has been updated to the needs of today’s law enforcement and civilians, combining maximum impact with covert concealment. The nunchuck has received a much needed update to bring this classic martial arts weapon into the 21st century. This telescoping nunchaku has handles that extend from 4″ to 13″ in an instant, and collapse just as quickly. This weapon easily tucks away in your cargo shorts, jeans, or in a hand bag. Made from durable steel, these nunchucks are heavier than most standard nunchaku and easily collapse into the included belt carrying case. While this weapon’s main function is quick striking, it can also be used to control an opponent’s extremities such as hands and feet by wrapping the chain around those parts and crossing the nunchuck’s handles in a X formation and applying pressure. Some martial arts training is recommended prior to the deployment and use of this weapon. A few videos of basic techniques have been added to the comments thread for you to view and get familiar with, YOUTUBE has additional videos from other sources that you may use as well. A set of practice nunchucks are also recommended while you get familiar with these techniques to minimize injury to yourself while practicing. Check with your local city and state law enforcement agencies for laws regarding this weapon.

This unit retails for around $39.00

THE LESS LETHAL MIDDLE GROUND

An interesting article regarding the increase of less lethal technology amongst the everyday consumer within recent years, from DefensiveCarry.com.

” With a push of a button, Carol Jara is ready to zap an attacker with her new stun gun.

She considered getting a handgun, but decided against it.

“I don’t feel that comfortable thinking that I could kill someone,” said Jara, 26, who lives in Miami and works as a graphic designer in Broward County.

Local gun shop owners say the number of people coming in looking for “less lethal” self-defense options such as pepper sprays and electric stun guns is on the rise. Whether out of fear or for personal beliefs, many people aren’t comfortable carrying guns.

“They want something in the middle. A big part of our society is that way,” said Jeff Dillard, president of National Law Enforcement Distributors in Davie. “There’s not a day that goes by when we don’t have four or five customers come in here discussing this.”

Choosing the right item isn’t easy.

In Florida, you can carry two different types of weapons without a permit: pepper sprays and stun guns, including the Taser.

Pepper spray

Pepper spray is the cheapest less-lethal item, starting at around $10 for a canister small enough to keep on a key chain. Containers can also be disguised as pens, pagers, lipstick and hand-held fitness weights. Made up of chemicals derived from chili peppers (“OC” spray) or tear gas (“CS” spray), pepper spray causes burning, stinging eyes and coughing. Dillard recommends pepper spray because the effects are lasting. When shot directly into the face and eyes, it will leave the attacker in pain for up to an hour if untreated.

“Whatever I came to do, that’s no longer on my mind,” Dillard said. “I’m going to be screaming and yelling and rubbing my eyes and in pain.”

There are drawbacks. If you fire it into the wind, you may end up with a face full of your own pepper spray.

Some people have been known to fight through the pain of pepper spray, said Robert J. Leitner, chief operating officer of Tactical Products Group in Delray Beach. He prefers stun guns for self-defense.

Stun guns

Stun guns are small, electronic devices that zap assailants, causing pain and locking up their muscles. Stun guns come in different shapes and styles and cost about $20 and up, with most putting out at least 50,000 volts of electricity.

“You only need a second or two to touch the assailant and it also has a powerful deterrent,” Leitner said. “In our experience, criminals fear them more than pepper sprays.”

One of the devices looks like a pink MP3 player. When a button is pushed, blue sparks arc from two prongs with a startling crackle.

Dillard said the downside of stun guns is that they require direct contact with an attacker, and they don’t have a lasting effect like pepper spray does.

You could also be zapped if the device were turned on you in a struggle.

Tasers

Tasers are the newest less-lethal items on the market. Unlike a traditional stun gun, the Taser shoots two barbed probes up to 15 feet to deliver a 30-second, 50,000 volt zap. They’re also the most expensive, starting at $299 for a base model. Police have used them for years to subdue unruly and combative suspects. Since 2006, civilians in Florida have been able to carry Tasers without a concealed weapons permit.

Steve Tuttle, spokesman for the Arizona-based Taser International, said the Taser has none of the shortcomings of pepper sprays and traditional stun guns. You can shoot the Taser from a distance, then drop it and run away. The device will continue to shock the attacker, even when you take your finger off of the button.

“I don’t want to get one foot away from them and try to apply something to them directly,” Tuttle said. “Place it on the ground, let it do the work for you and get to safety.”

Dillard recommends against civilians buying Tasers., like other stun guns. He said recovery from a Taser is immediate after the 30 seconds of zapping.

“What are you going to do when those 30 seconds are up?” he said.

And what if you miss? Both of the Taser’s barbed probes must hit a person’s body or clothing for it to work. Tuttle said if that happens, you can also use the device’s handset as a contact stun gun.

Use caution

Stun guns and pepper spray can be found in local gun stores. Some convenience stores, department stores and outdoor stores also carry pepper spray.

These items are designed to stop attackers without killing them, but there have been rare instances where such devices proved deadly. If you purchase one, you should treat it like a firearm: realize that it is a weapon and make sure to keep it far from kids’ reach.

Dillard also warned against storing your pepper spray inside a car. He said Florida’s heat can weaken the seals on canisters, and it can take up to six hours to air out your car out if it leaks.

Cossetty Denbow, general manger of National Law Enforcement Distributors, said it would also be good to take a self-defense class, just in case.

“Because with every less-lethal item, there’s always the caveat that it might not work,” she said.”

UZI- Tactical Defender

When most people hear the name Uzi the first thing that pops into mind is the lead spitting sub machine gun of the 70′s and 80′s, it’s not likely an image of anything remotely less lethal. However, from the infamous Israeli firearms company comes a line of new age self-defense tools amongst which is the Uzi Tactical Defender self-defense pens. These robust writing utensils combine everyday efficiency with compact self-defense effectiveness. Modeled with respect to the martial arts kubaton weapon, these self-defense pens are great for concealment and ready for self-defense at a moment’s notice. Crafted from aircraft grade aluminum, these pens are created to withstand a beating and deliver one at the same time. There are two models available from the Tactical Defender series, the TACPEN 1 & TACPEN 2. The TACPEN 1 flaunts a jagged metal crown which can be used for gouging and stabbing, the crown can collect DNA evidence in the event that it is used in a close quarter combat situation and scratches off a piece of the assailant’s skin. The TACPEN 2 sports a pointed edge which can be used for targeting an assailant’s pressure points and delivering precise strikes, but also doubles as a glass breaker in emergencies. Both models measure roughly 6 inches in length, come with a one year warranty, and accept the standard Parker style, Schmidt and Fisher Space pen refills. This Less Lethal Alternative is available at many online retailers such as Amazon.com.

This unit’s MSRP is around $25.00
